Parents protest school fee hike in Coimbatore

Nowadays the mission of the managements of unaided educational institutions, including those run by the Christian Missionaries, is to make money rather than impart quality education. They not only charge exorbitantly high fees but also collect huge amount as capitation fees despite the fact that the Supreme Court of India has declared the collection of capitation fees as illegal. Some of the private unaided Medical Colleges collect as much as Rs.50 lakh as as capitation fees; reputed engineering colleges receive about Rs.10 lakh. Some schools collect hefty amount as capitation fees during admission of students. But these institutions pay pittance to the teachers. Many of them lack adequate infrastructure and qualified teachers. Now all sorts of persons have entered the field of education as a means of illegally making money. Many managements have started numerous institutions and as a result the quality of management of such institutions have become weak and inefficient. One former illicit liquor trader is now owning one deemed university, 8 engineering colleges, two management institutes, half a dozen polytechnic colleges in and around Chennai City. There are many such cases of persons with criminal backgrounds, including politicians belonging to all political parties, owning numerous institutions all over the country. Nowadays it is rare to find persons starting educational institutions with philanthropic attitude to serve the society. Education has become more and more commercialized during the past decade or so. Corruption among politicians and officials is the main reason for the managements to flout rules and regulations. Otherwise, how could they collect extra fees than that permitted by the government and indulge in the collection of capitation fees?
